Standards explained

ISO, EN, NFPA and more. Assurance for your application.

At Varuflex, we don't start with ISO, EN or NFPA. We start with your application.
Whether you work with fire services, industry or shipping: your material simply has to do what it needs to do. That's why we build our offering around the standards that make a difference.

Think of NBN S21-024 for professional firefighting, supplemented with EN, ISO and DIN for European and industrial applications, and NFPA or MED where international or maritime requirements apply.

What does a standard mean in practice?

A standard is not a theory. It is a guarantee.

It determines among other things:

  • how much pressure a hose can withstand
  • how it reacts to temperature or chemicals
  • how durable and safe it remains in use

In other words: a standard ensures that your material is correct – not just on paper, but especially in the field.

The standards that really matter to you

We like to keep it practical. These are the standards we work with every day:

EN (European Standard)

European standards ensure that products within the EU meet the same requirements. This means: fewer misunderstandings, more certainty. A common one in our sector is EN 12115 for chemical hoses.

NBN S21 - 024

The Belgian reference for fire hoses. Specifies exactly what a hose must comply with for professional use.

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)

The American standard within international fire safety, particularly relevant in petrochemicals and high-risk environments. In short, where safety in incidents is crucial.

MED

Essential for shipping: your material is compliant and usable at sea, worldwide.

DIN

German & often applied in heavier industrial applications where higher requirements apply.

ASTM, SAE, ...

In addition, there are also sector-specific or country-specific standards. DIN (German), ASTM (American), SAE (automotive sector)... Each with its own focus, but all with the same goal: to guarantee reliable, safe applications.

DIN (German Industrial Standard)

DIN standards are the German quality standards and are often used as a reference for heavier and intensive applications within Europe.

In fire hoses, particularlyDIN 14811is important. This standard specifies among other things:

  • working pressure and burst pressure
  • abrasion resistance
  • mechanical strength
  • durability under intensive use

What does that mean in concrete terms?

Hoses according to DIN standards are designed to withstand more stress and last longer, even in demanding conditions such as fire service interventions or industrial environments.

DIN is therefore often seen as a stricter technical reference within the European standard framework.

Note:a product can be certified according to DIN or compliant with DIN. The difference lies in the official certification, not in the technical performance.

Why this is important for you

Standards make the difference between doubt and certainty:

  • Safety – Your material does what it is supposed to do, under all circumstances
  • Reliability – Less risk of failure or damage
  • Compliance – Ready for audits, inspections, and insurance
  • Efficiency – No discussion, just clarity

Our role? To relieve you of concerns

You don’t need to be a standards expert. We already are.

We translate standards into a solution that works for your situation. Correct, practical, and immediately usable.

Are you unsure about the right standard for your application? We would be happy to look at it together; quickly, clearly, and without detours.
